While making preparations for a photo session my mind is filled with memories and plans. Sitting with a changing bag in my lap and loading film holders, I am already seeing the images I hope to capture. I form in my mind what I will see in the viewfinder, how the light will fall and change with time. I see negatives on the lightbox, sparkling like silver jewelry with yet to be formed images. I watch as dream world prints float to life under the dim glow of the darkroom safelight. |
When I set out with my cameras, sometimes I find the pictures already in my mind. At other times, they've slipped away like dim dreams. In the end, it doesn't matter whether I find them or not. All that is just a starting point, a way to get me out the door and looking. |
Once you start looking, leaving yourself open to the world around you, there are endless surprises waiting. Using different methods of photography: pinhole cameras, infrared films, and alternative processes, helps in finding these surprises. I approach photography as a grand experiment in exploring the world. |
